Seconds from disaster 3

American Airlines Flight 587 is a popular flight between New York´s John F. Kennedy Airport and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. Two months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on 12 November, 2001, an Airbus A300-605R takes off on this routine flight. At 9:16 AM, within two minutes of take-off, something goes horribly wrong and Flight 587 is in dire trouble. The tail fin shears off the Airbus fuselage and the plane is doomed. It slams into Rockaway, a residential area of New York City that is home to many firemen, police and their families who had been deeply affected by the events 9/11. The horrifying crash takes the lives of 265 passengers, crew, and New York City residents. Fingers inevitably point to terrorism, but could this accident be attributed to design failure or human error? With the nation waiting for answers, the National Transportation Safety Board conducts one of the most baffling and far-reaching air safety investigations ever carried out with conclusions that rock the commercial aviation industry.

Dangerous encounters 2

To study big carnivores, researchers have to get close, very close. But how do you get within arm´s length to some of the most dangerous predators on the planet who can easily take down prey that´s five times your size? To find out, Dr. Brady Barr creates a protective suit that enables him to crawl alongside a Nile crocodile. To design the suit, Brady examines different techniques used to protect humans from other large animals. He climbs into a protective cage modified from those used with great white sharks, and places himself next to a deer carcass and a pack of hungry wolves. Next, Brady heads to rodeo school to test out the barrels used to protect cowboys from bull horns. A few rolls in the barrel tells Brady that he needs a lightweight version to protect him from crocs, hippos and potential catastrophe. With the help of National Geographic engineers, Brady puts together a croc suit with enough protection to keep him safe from harm, but lifelike enough to help him fit in with the real crocodiles. Brady puts the suit to the test next to some of the largest and most powerful carnivores around.

Big bigger biggest 1

The longest suspension bridge in the world stretching unsupported for nearly two miles over the Akashi Strait is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan. This film reveals how seven ingenious technological breakthroughs have led to the development of this super-structure. From robots that paint it to the wires supporting its deck long enough to stretch over seven times around the world - to its earthquake proof towers. We reveal how the bridge is made from over a quarter of a million tons of steel, how its 28,000 ton cables are anchored into the riverbanks, and how the engineers built a scale model of the bridge 40 metres long to test how its design would stand up to typhoon winds of up to 180 miles per hour. Using a mix of stunning CGI animation and on-location filming, this film reveals the innovations that changed Bridge design forever and enabled them to grow in size and scale …from big to bigger into the Akashi Kaikyo the Worlds biggest.

22:40

Seconds from disaster 3

On 26 December, 2004, the largest earthquake in 40 years strikes deep beneath the Indian Ocean. Lasting eight minutes and stretching a record 1,600 kilometres in length, the earthquake´s massive strength surpasses measurement on the Richter scale. Just after 8:15 AM, billions of tonnes of water speed towards land with a force equivalent to more than 30,000 Hiroshima bombs. Within minutes, the terrifying wall of water makes landfall, engulfing entire towns in its path. Deadly currents and dangerous debris tear buildings apart, as people across South Asia fight for survival. Ultimately claiming the lives of more than 250,000 people, it is the most devastating tsunami in recorded history and scientists are puzzled by the extraordinary size and savagery of the waves. Tsunami experts must analyze the geologic episode, looking for clues behind the tsunami´s overwhelming force. Their findings re-define tsunami prediction and reveal that tsunamis may pose a greater threat than previously realized.

Dangerous encounters 2

Great white sharks, Nile crocodiles and even the Tyrannosaurus Rex - all colossal beasts feared for their terrifying bites. But which animal has the most monstrous bite? To find out, Dr. Brady Barr uses a special bite meter to measure each animal´s bite force and break his all-time record. He wrestles a 2.4-metre nurse shark and carefully crawls down a red wolf´s burrow, tempting it to take a bite. From the air to the ocean, Brady looks at creatures big and small and finds super strength in some surprisingly small packages. A Tasmanian devil exerts almost the same bite pressure as a grey wolf more than six times its size. With the help of other researchers, Brady even examines the bite force of the Tyrannosaurus Rex - the largest carnivore thought to have ever roamed the Earth. The results: a T-Rex could exert 2,721 kilograms of bite force - the equivalent to being crushed by a Hummer. However, the Tyrannosaurus Rex has some competition for King of Bite Force title. Brady finds a croc whose mouth is so powerful, it has the strongest bite force of any living animal ever recorded.
